Marianne has been inspired by the work of Vincent van Gogh, Impressionism, Fauvism, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, collages of Robert Rauschenberg, and the wild free expressiveness of the Eastern Block countries. She has travelled the world extensively, viewing many of the art works in the original.
In 1998, she and her husband Tony left the bustle of the city to move to Wellington. Then in 2003, Tony retired from the university and they moved to the quiet country village of McGregor, where she spends her time gardening, making leather-wrapped journals for sale in a local shop and through art classes in Cape Town, teaching occasional calligraphy and book-binding classes and painting the quaint cottages and fields in the area, in bright, clear colours.
